Exciting news! Friday’s will now be dedicated to “Friday Fives,” which will incorporate lists from products to foods to life in general.
It took me a while to get the creative juices flowing again. As you can probably tell with my one-post-a-week situation lately, I’m haven’t exactly been on my game. Work (as always) has been super busy and, frankly, I just haven’t felt very inspired. It’s like I had all these ideas in my mind for weeks, wrote them down, and then when I went to start writing my brain just shut off. Maybe it’s stress, maybe it’s lack of sleep, maybe it’s just a slump. Whatever it is, it needs to leave me alone and let me live my life lol
It hasn’t been just hard to find inspiration, though, the universe never really gives it to you that easy. Along with the stress and lack of sleep (and if we’re being honest…NOT the healthiest diet lately) has come breakouts. I grew up with horrible acne and still get it from time to time. I’ve never had completely perfect skin even when I was cleared up (hello scars and pores!!) and probably never will. When I first started my job a year ago and then going well into the Fall, my skin just freaked out. I am guessing it was a combination of the suddenly frequent travel, stress, and not a great diet while on trips. Yall…it was BAD. Like high school and semester abroad bad..more on that later. I finally got it cleared up for the most part after that dramatic life change it was reacting to, but I’m still getting zits here and there.
Below are 5 must have products for acne prone skin. Everyone’s skin is different and products perform differently from person to person, but these are the ones that I personally have come to love and believe have really helped keep my acne at bay.
I don’t know if it was just coincidence that my horrible fall acne cleared up after I started using this cleanser or if it really is that amazing, but I love it. I spent years looking for that perfect face wash and tested out all those fancy shmancy ones with all the different ingredients and claims, but what I’ve come to find is that all you really need is one good gentle, simple cleanser and leave the other stuff to your serums, spot treatments, and masks.
This product is a miracle worker. Okay, okay, that’s a little dramatic and I don’t want to give anyone false hope, but let’s just say it does what it says and does a damn good job of it. It combines salicylic acid and calamine (remember? That gunk your mom used to put on all your mosquito bites as a kid turning you into a tiny pink polka-dotted monster? Yeah, that stuff.) and other ingredients to act as a quick drying lotion for an overnight spot treatment. It is designed mainly for those pesky white heads, so don’t go trying to put it on your cystic under-the-skin bump of torture and expect it to be gone by morning…been there, tried that. Doesn’t work. I also don’t want to lead you to think that if you put it on all your spots before you go to bed that you’ll wake up with flawless skin. It won’t make it completely vanish, but it definitely speeds up the healing process and dries it up quicker than it would with nothing.
I don’t even know where to begin with this. I swear, this moisturizer is my HOLY. GRAIL. If you have read my last product review you know that if I say something is my holy grail, I 100% mean it and you need to go purchase it right away. I do have a whole product review post of this particular moisturizer in my drafts right now, so I won’t go too in depth about it here..Just keep your eyes peeled 😉 in brief, it smells amazing, feels amazing on the skin, and has spf 47 which is..well..amazing. It’s a bit more expensive than others on the market (I have the smaller bottle at $32), but it seriously lasts forever. I’m at 6 months with this baby and still have a quarter or so left, and that’s with me using it every single day. I really cannot recommend it enough.
I would be lying to yall if I said that I got rid of my acne with solely store-bought products. I did spend half my time from 2005-2010 in the dermatologist’s office and I also went back for the first time since last October where I got prescription strength gel that has helped a ton. I don’t use it every day because I find it dries out my skin a little too much, so I go back and forth between that and the Neutrogena Rapid Clear Daily Leave-On Mask (which was also recommended by my dermatologist!) and I do attest to the belief that this had a huge impact in helping clear my acne. It works like a mask, but best part is that you don’t need to wash it off–it simply absorbs into the skin and works around the clock. It contains 2.5%Benzoyl Peroxide, which I have personally found to work better than salicylic acid. Even with a high percent, I haven’t had any problems with this causing dryness. I have tried countless drug store acne treatments over the years and this is by far my favorite. And for 10 bucks? Can’t beat it.
One of my best friends turned me on to this and I am sure glad she did! This is another pricy item on the list, but you only need a couple drops each night so it will last you throughout most of year before you have to replace (just don’t spill 4 months worth like I did..still distraught over that). It’s a blend of oils including Lavender, Evening Primrose and Squalene that does not feel heavy or super greasy on the skin. It absorbs quickly and I find that with lavender being one of the ingredients, the smell also helps me relax before going to sleep. It simply just feels and looks luxurious.
At first I didn’t see much of a difference other than my face feeling smoother in the morning that normal, which is a plus in itself anyway. Over time, though, I noticed scars and fine lines fading and a smoother, more even complexion in the morning. It’s a great addition to your nightly routine that helps keep your skin smooth, moisturized, and happy. All factors in clearing acne!
